Recension av Salem Falls - Jodi Picoult

Svensk titel:

Finns inte översatt till svenska såvitt jag kan avgöra, mitt tips om de skulle översätta den är att behålla den engelska titeln, eftersom det är namnet på staden som det mesta av handlingen kretsar kring. De böcker av författaren som jag sett översatta till svenska hittills är Allt för min syster, Försvinnanden och Den tionde kretsen.

About the title:

There's not much to say about the English title itself. It's the name of the New Hampshire town where most of the story takes place. I do not think this title has been translated to Swedish yet. The Swedish titles I've seen by this writer so far are My Sister's Keeper, Vanishing Acts and The Tenth Circle.

Anledning till att läsa boken:

Jag är med i en mycket trevlig internet-bokklubb genom yahoo, där alla har pratat om den här författaren. Jag blev ju såklart nyfiken och ville läsa något av henne. Den första boken av denne författare jag fick tag på var Mercy. Detta är en av hennes tidigare, och jag kan rakt av rekommendera att undvika den. Jag har inte hört någon som har gillat den, handlingen är rätt absurd, researchen vad gäller skotsk historia är enligt uppgift riktigt dålig och karaktärerna känns väldigt fyrkantiga och man vill slå dem i skallen med något hårt. Så, frågar man sig, varför läsa fler böcker av denna författare, kan man fråga sig? Ja, då är vi tillbaka till min bokklubb, där jag fick rekommendationen att inte ge upp, och att oavsett vilken annan bok jag fick tag på av denne författare, skulle den nog falla mig mer i smaken. Framför allt rekommenderades Allt för min syster, och så denna, Salem Falls.

Reson for reading the book:

I'm a member of a very nice online book club through yahoo, where where this writer comes highly recommended. So I deceided to try one. The first book I got my hands on was Mercy. This is one of her earlier books and all I can say about this book is, avoid it, basically. I haven't heard anyone say they like this book, the plot line is pretty absurd, the research when it comes to Scottish history is embarrassing (accosring to a Scottish woman in the book club) and the characters feels one-dimensional and annoying and you want to hit them on the head with a baseball bat. So why would anyone want to read something else by this writer? Well, we're back with the book club, where I was told not to give up and that regardless of what other book I read by Jodi Picoult, I would at least like it better than this one. Above all, the books that were recommended were My Sister's Keeper and then this one, Salem Falls.

Sammandrag av handlingen:

Denna bok är egentligen tre genrer samtidigt - romantik, mysterium/deckare och rättegångsdrama. Jack St. Bride kommer till den lilla staden Salem Falls i New Hampshire, utan någon anknytning till staden, ingen vet var han kommer ifrån. Addie, som driver ett lunch-hak i stan anställer honom som diskare. Han och Addie blir efter hand förälskade i varndra, men resten av stans invånare är mycket misstänksamma. De tar reda på hans förflutna - han har suttit inne för våldtäkt av minderårig. Staden grips av panik och några individer gör klart för Jack att de helst såg att han lämnade stan helt och hållet. Men Jack tänker inte ge sig så lätt.

Jack är charmig och attraktiv, i sitt förra liv var han lärare i high school och var väldigt populär bland sina elever. Gillian, en high school tjej fattar dock tycke för Jack och försöker förföra honom med Wiccan magi. En natt blir Gillian överfallen i skogen och hon hävdar att det är Jack som har våldtagit henne. Addie far tillbaka till Jacks gamla hemstad och hans gamla skola, för att försöka ta reda på sanningen om vad som egentligen hände förra gången, i ett försök att rentvå honom och för att se om hon ska kunna lita på Jack igen.

Summary of the plot

This book is actually thre genres at once - romance, mystery and courtroom drama. Jack St. Bride arrives in the small N.H. town Salem Falls, without any connection to this town, and nobody knows anything about him. Addie, who runs a diner in town hires him as a dishwasher. After some time, he and Addie fall in love. But the rest of the people of Salem Falls are very suspicious of this newcomer. They find out about his past, he's been in prison for statutory rape. The whole town is seized by fear and som people let Jack know that they would prefer if he left Salem Falls altogether. But Jack is not about to give in that easily.

Jack is a very charming and attractive man, in his former life he was a high school professor at a high school and he was very popular among his students.
Gillian, a high school girl sets her eyes on Jack and tries to seduce him with Wiccan magic. One night, Gillian is attacked in the woods and she claims that Jack raped her. Addie goes back to Jack's old hometown and his old school, to find out what really happened the last time, in an attempt to clear his name and to find out for herself if she can trust him again.

Omdöme och betyg:

Jag tyckte om den här boken, den höll mitt intresse och jag tyckte att författaren lyckades bra med ett svårt ämne - våldtäkt - och skrev både utifrån offrens perspektiv och från perspektivet hos den som är potentiellt oskyldigt anklagad. Personbeskrivningen var BETYDLIGT bättre än i Mercy, men det känns tyvärr fortfarande inte helt trovärdigt hela vägen. Vissa händelser är lite väl konstruerade.

My opinion and rating

I liked this book, it held my interest and I thought the writer succeded in writing about a difficult subject - rape - and that she wrote both from the perspective of the victims of rape as well as from the perspective of the innocent who's accused of rape. The characterization was A LOT better than in Mercy, but still it doesn't feel credible all the way. Some of the events felt a bit too unbelievable and designed to make a certain point or to connect certain events.

Andra delen av utdraget handlar om bokens huvudpersoner, Jack och Addie. Jack har lämnat sitt jobb som diskare på Addies restaurang utan att meddela Addie och nu när han kommer tillbaka är hon arg. Citatet illustrerar också Jacks stora mani - Jeopardy!

The first part of the quote is about four high school girls who have a secret - they are Wiccan. They have just saved the life of an elder man and they are now thinking of other ways to use their Wiccan powers.
The second part of the quote is about, the two main characters of the novel, Jac and Addie. Jack has left his job as a dishwasher without letting Addie know and now when he returns she is mad with him. The quote also illustrates Jack's big obsession - Jeopardy!

Chelsea's eyes widened. 'You know that goes against the Wiccan
rede, Gilly. Whatever you do comes back to you three-fold.
'Well, okay, Mr. Hollings is a stupid example. But if Wicca's all
about keeping the balance of nature, then why couldn't we use
